Me: How does it feel to be a twelve year old?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Weird.<\/p>\n

Me: Why?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Because. I’m not eleven.<\/p>\n

Me: How did you spend your birthday?<\/p>\n

12 year old: I went to see Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation<\/em> and then I played Laser Tag. I ate breakfast of donuts. And a dinner of steak.<\/p>\n

Me: Did you like the movie?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Yes. <\/p>\n

Me: Favorite part?<\/p>\n

12 year old: The ending.<\/p>\n

Me: Was it a good birthday?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Yeah.<\/p>\n

Me: Can I get more than one word answers?<\/p>\n

12 year old: No. Okay, yes.<\/p>\n

Me: What do you like to do these days?<\/p>\n

12 year old: I like to program in Unity and do math.<\/p>\n

Me: What are your favorite books?<\/p>\n

12 year old: The House of the Scorpion<\/em><\/a> and Ready Player One<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Me: What are you listening to?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Lo Normali by EZ.<\/p>\n

Me: What are your favorite things to watch?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Big Bang Theory<\/em>. Simpsons<\/em>. Silicon Valley<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Me: Those are the same shows you watched last year.<\/p>\n

12 year old: Yeah.<\/p>\n

Me: Haven’t you matured?<\/p>\n

12 year old: No.<\/p>\n

Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Computer programmer. Game.<\/p>\n

Me: What are you looking forward to in 7th grade?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Math. 8th grade math.<\/p>\n

Me: What are your goals as a 12 year old?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Survive to be thirteen.<\/p>\n

Me: Thirteen means bar mitzvah. Ready for that?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Sure.<\/p>\n

Me: Any grand pronouncements?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Not really. I am amazing.<\/p>\n

12 year old: Like [reaches for phone; I say no], um, something you want to say? <\/p>\n

Me: Is this the last year we’ll do these interviews? Your answers are pretty boring.<\/p>\n

12 year old: No. This is the not the last year we will be doing the interviews.<\/p>\n

Me: Do you have anything interesting to say?<\/p>\n

12 year old: No.<\/p>\n

Me: So why should we keep doing this?<\/p>\n

12 year old: Because maybe next year I will have something interesting to say. <\/p>\n
